Nestled in the heart of East Africa, Uganda beckons with its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and a coffee legacy that weaves through its history. For centuries, coffee has played a significant role in Uganda’s story. The country’s fertile soils, combined with its favorable climate and varying altitudes, create the ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Uganda is renowned for its
production of both Robusta and Arabica coffee, with a proud heritage in each variety.
Approximately 80% of the coffee production in Uganda is Robusta, while Arabica coffee is cultivated at elevations
ranging from 1300 to 2300 meters above sea level. Arabica is primarily grown along the Kenyan border (Bugishu) or
in the mountainous regions of the west (Wugar). On the other hand, Robusta coffee thrives at altitudes between 900
and 1500 meters, covering areas surrounding Lake Victoria and the western regions.
Although the majority of Uganda’s coffee production leans towards Robusta, it is important to note that the country
also offers high-quality Arabica coffees. While Robusta dominates the industry, Uganda’s Arabica offerings from the
Bugishu and western mountainous regions showcase exceptional flavors and are highly regarded in the specialty
coffee market.
